New Kind of Radio Station
Last year I was crusin the radio stations while riding in the car and I found one that really appealed to me (94.9 The Sound). Right when I started listening to it I noticed it was different. There were barely any ads and the DJ (or recording) kept talking about a perfect 10 playlist. Apparently you can go online and make you’re perfect 10 playlist. If they have the music they’ll play the list. They also notify you when it is played. This seems to allow this statioin to be the epitome of variety.
I haven’t submitted a playlist myself, but I’m interested in doing so. I’m not sure if there are other radio stations doing the same or similar things. But it just appealed to me in general. If you live in the area it services you should check it out. You can even listen to it online.
I’m not affiliated with this radio station in any way.

One of the major issues with radio these days is the dispoable need for disc jockeys. Computers are taking over many jobs in the broadcasting field (think about it—you can just set up iTunes to play music on a party shuffle and broadcast it, and I doubt people would know the difference).
94.9 The Sound is owned by Entercom. Entercom and Clear Channel have been taking steps to weed out DJs and replace them with computers. KGBY in Sacramento recently did that (check my blog—people are still posting comments today about something that happened three weeks ago), as did KBIG-FM in Los Angeles. Great music, just not the most personable stations.

Nice station, but thats a horrible circumstance. I feel DJs are very important to general radio. Hmm…
Also, I remember reading that post. I just never had a chance to comment on it.

The station is doing alright. I was having a conversation with someone the other day, and we agreed that stations who have DJs are more personable than stations who go jockless.
